The Great American Love Story

Dear America,

Well your fate has been decided. As of the 20th January 2017 your President-elect will become the 45th President of the United States, one Donald J. Trump.

In a white-wash victory, Trump denied his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, the opportunity to become the first female President of the United States. The 290 electoral votes saw Trump claim the win, taking four of the six battleground states. Clinton's fate was sealed when Florida turned red in favour of Trump, the billionaire business man known for his real estate empire and reality TV show.

But what inspired U.S. citizens to elect a man who has no prior political experience over a woman who has spent the better part of 30 years devoting her life to politics?

To begin, politics is tough, as 'the Donald' stated in his victory speech. It is an industry built on the basis of helping create a better country however, more often than not, politics is a game of cleverly constructed speeches and strategies designed to tear down ones opposition. This is at the core of Trump's victory. Throughout his entire campaign, Mr Trump has vowed to revoke Obamacare (the US equivalent of Medicare), imprison Hilary Clinton, deny Muslim refugees the opportunity to enter the States and openly declared that he would build a wall between America and Mexico.

So why did Americans elect a man with extremely loose morals and no political understanding?

Because it is believed that Trump, who is not politically minded, can change America, making it a nation for the people, built on what the people need, in his words "we can make America great again."

Now, as you're thinking about the Donald Trump who is determined to restore American greatness, you must also think about Hillary Clinton, who actually polled 219,762 more popular votes than Trump, according to CNN Politics.

Mrs Clinton is the ideal politician, or so it would seem. Having been secretary of state, a U.S senator for New York, first Lady of the United States, first Lady of Arkansas, a lawyer, a law professor and an activist, becoming President seems the ideal next step. However, the scandal surrounding the Clinton family has led to unprecedented distrust by many average American people.

Whether its her involvement in the health care task force initiated during her husband, Bill Clinton's presidential term or the Clinton Foundations alleged funding of armed weapons in Iraq or even the email scandal that clouded the final days of her campaign, Hillary Clinton has given the American people something to despise and dislike.

While Clinton hasn't been the cleanest politician, wouldn't it have been better to elect someone who knows the game rather than a man who believes that you can grab a women on the 'pussy'?

Clearly this wasn't to be and the fairytale wasn't set to come true.

As Hillary's campaign was heavily endorsed by celebrities, including artists such as Katy Perry to Lady Gaga and even Beyonce and Jay Z, Donald Trump headed to the mid-west and rallied his troops to restore the American dream of greater financial security and better health care benefits. These states, known as the 'rust belt' or 'fly over states', all forgotten during Clinton's campaign, who ironically flew coast to coast in an attempt to claim victory.

I strongly believe that if the American people wanted to make a political statement they should have voted for the two other candidates who ran during the campaign rather than electing an irrational businessman with no political experience. While you might think that Donald Trump has the power to 'bring back America', you must remember, he is still a Republican candidate and will still have to confine to the parties policies.

So America, as you dwell on your so called 'end of the world,' have reassurance that the Trump that spent years campaigning as an arrogant, self-centred, egotistical businessmen may not actually be the president that you get. In his victory speech, Trump was open about uniting all American people and has relaxed his strong stance on many issues which he was determined to rectify or implement.

Now that the election is over and the almost certain results are in, I wonder which Donald will stand before the American people during his inauguration to be the 45th President of the United States of America.
